Leadership Development

Published on Tuesday, 15 February 2011

The Student Leadership Committee (SLC) seeks to develop character and leadership qualities among students through the provision of the leadership training and leadership opportunities. The SLC envisions that at the end of each Dunenarnite’s stay with the school, they would have acquired the necessary skills to be a confident leader and a responsible citizen.

As true leadership begins with self, pupils must first be aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and emotions and be able to manage them before leading others. Thus, the SLC has identified essential leadership skills pupils should acquire in its leadership development framework. These skills are classified into two broad areas – Personal Leadership skills and Interpersonal Leadership skills as described in Table 1. Undergirding the impartation of these skills are the school’s and national’s values – respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, care and harmony. These values are regularly communicated to all staff and pupils.

At Level 2, Student Leaders contribute their services in areas such as Prefects, House, Class Committees, Clubs, Uniform Groups, Sports and Performing Arts. The leadership opportunities in the Student Council further augment SLC student leadership development efforts.

To ensure continuity and self-renewal in the student leadership body, Student Leaders who have graduated were invited back to serve as Junior Alumni Leaders (JAL). These JAL assist the SLC to plan and implement school’s programmes such as the Secondary One Orientation Programme, Secondary 2 Adventure Camp, Student Leaders Training Camp, Annual Cross Country, School Sports Day and the Night Study Programme.
